Last year we tried killing the nymphs and lantern flies with dish soap, neem oil, vinegar, etc. It reduced the population but in the end, we used bifenthrin and they were gone. We looked for the egg masses but could not find any.

Now we have the little black and white nymphs hopping around the deck and grape vines. What kills the nymphs? I understand that the bifenthrin does not do it!!

Please advise, since smacking them is the only thing that works.

Others cannot stop this problem, either, all we can do is all work on it. You have a house, I have to deal with 20 acres, so be thankful. Also, the Tree of Heaven is only one of over 70 trees and plants the lantern fly favors. On my property it is 100% impossible to control the eggs. I am almost 70 and there are thousands of trees in my woods, plus other peoples woods around me, and farmland. Pumping s little spray bottle is not something my arthritis can do, but at Harbor Freight or Tractor Supply, you can buy a 1-2 gallon sprayer for under $20 worthwhile bucks that allows you to hand-pump air pressure into the bottle full of your pesticide of choice and then you can hold the button down for one continuous spray snd sprays farther than a little hand-pump regular spray bottle. In mine I will be putting dishsoap, plus borax✅, and I may add tea tree oil or oregano oil as well. I think DE can possible clog up a spray nozzle, so I’ll be powdering that one with a large salt shaker, Believe me, if you have the first and later the neighbors get yours, they may be upset with you, even though this is no ones fault. I am also going to sprinkle the ground under my trees and plants with borax and water it in. That way, when the bugs eat the bark or leaves, the borax in them will kill the bugs in their first dining. Hate to ruin their day, but these bugs are a plague. They ruined all of my plants and flowers last year and so I am on the warpath this year. Good luck with yours. Just sprinkling a box of borax on the ground might and watering it in may wipe them out no matter where they are. That may mean you might not be able to eat your harvest this year, I don’t know, but you’ll still have your harvest for next year. Borax in the yard can also lower other pests, but in truth, beware—I would not put it on your flowers where bees need the nectar. We have to protect the bees. I’d use DE on those, but not in thr flowers themselves or wherever ghe bees could get ut on them. It isn’t toxic, but it cannot be allowed to get inyo the bees’ joints or it can dehydrate them and that will kill them. DE is great for powdering ants and other damaging pests where bees cannot be reached. Whatever you choose to do, protect the bees and beneficial insects. DE is harmless, even helpful to humans and pets. It is just fossilized seaweed that has a sharp edges on a microscopic level. It will definitely kill lantern bugs topically even though they stay alive for another hour or so. In that hour, they are not able to eat or ruin your plants. But because they hop far, it it not easy to get DE on them. I hope all of this helps make it easier. As far as making bottle traps, I’d add borax to those.

A cat. The trick is that you must feed your cat by 2pm, and never after that. That way, they hunt for food at night, which also makes them healthier.
If you feed them in the afternoon and:or evening, they will not hunt, and you will have mice.

Hi my house is attacked front side and back with the lantern fly. i can't stay outside every min to spray them. i look around and don't see others houses with this problem. i have seen the flies tho come from a certain direction. i would like to know why people - those with tree of life are not made to take care of this problem before the flies are flying in swarms to my house!!! if everyone were told they would get fined if the eggs were taken care of maybe there wouldn't be so many. i realize they fly but if they were killed as eggs. this could temper the problem i can't walk out side my house without getting attacked or sit in my back yard. thank you
