Thanks for these suggestions! I have a cat, and although I know the cat food didn't create the problem, they are staying partly due to the abundance of cat food and cat litter boxes. I can't pick up the food after an hour because he is a very old cat and eats very slowly and munches throughout the day. I made a spray bottle of water and dish soap and I spray them in the kitchen, as I figure a little soapy water won't hurt my cat if he licks it off his paws. But I'm at a loss for the litter boxes. They have hooded lids and need to remain hooded because of my cat's ways of using the box, but the drain flies swarm the box so much that I know it's an irritant to the cat and it makes him not want to use his box. I've Googled and found a few short lists of essential oils that are safe to use around cats but none of them specify spraying it on the litter where he will walk and scrape and dig and be exposed up close to it while in the box. Do you know of any essential oils or other natural substances that will both kill the drain flies and also will not harm cats and is able to be sprayed on litter?? Thanks for any tips you can provide.

Hi, thanks for all this great info!
To be sure we're talking about the same pest, mine are tiny black flyers that look like delta shaped airplanes and if you kill it against a wall it leaves a black trace. Yuch.
Couple yrs ago I used the baking soda + household cleaning vinegar solution and they were gone. This year, I tried that for 2 weeks even added chemical drain cleaner, used a brush to clean down the drains, did every drain in the house every night for a week, even poured bleach and they are still a few here and there.

I will try your salt and baking soda recipe but will much appreciate if you:
1) confirm what I described are indeed the flies you are describing (I call them delta bombers due to their shape),
2) any additional suggestions what to do to get rid of them once and for all!

Thank you!!
